Ah, what a glorious sunrise over the lake! It’s 6 AM, the water is as flat as glass, and there are no boats yet to stir its surface.
I thank you all my friends for your concern, your offers of help, your kind, wise and funny words of support and for being… well just friends. This means the world to me!
My stay away from home will start late afternoon today, when I check into the University Hospital here in Zurich. Milena and the girls will of course bring me and make sure I can settle in comfortably. Thankfully I’ve got a nice room with a view (with binoculars I might even be able to make out my house across the lake).
As mentioned earlier, the operation proper is routine and I should be out of the operating theatre by about 2 PM on Monday. The plan is to wake me up from anaesthesia right away to be able to test my neurological responses. Expect my next post Tuesday morning latest!
Cheerio,
Tom
Hi Tom,
Sent a few tasteless jokes by email we hope you will enjoy. Hope the hospital food is as good as the room sounds.
Read out BLOG entries to the boys, from them knowing you personally, they really understand your views and also appreciate how ironic life can be. They say Hi to Melina and the girls and hope for some good news.
We will be thinking of you tomorrow and look forward to your next BLOG entry on Tuesday.
Good luck and best Wishes from us all.
Brendan and the Clan
Our thoughts are with you on this difficult day – hoping for better news on Tuesday,
Cheers

Hi Tom, So glad to know you still have your humor, which must be helping everyone. Our thought and prayers are with you, Milena and the girls.
We will keep checking in on your blog to see the updates.
LOL & Love, Debbie, Kerry, Jake & Bradley
Thinking of you right now and am eagerly awaiting your next entry. Get well soon, so together we can resume doing what we do best…
Very BIG hug,
Tony V.
Tom,
by this time you should be asleep and done with the surgery, though probably you’ll have woken up and spoken, without having any clue who you are, what day it is, and why are you wearing a turban and why are all these people looking down at you.
As you say, neurosurgery is a fairly safe and routine thing these days, though of course not without risk.
Try to be easy on yourself in the weeks (and months) to come, as recovery is sometimes deceptive. You’ll look great, sound fine, everyone will say you’re a miracle.
Look at the funny side when you call a close friend and they answer and you say “Ja? who’s this?”
Thinking of you all day… it is only noon in portland oregon…. much love to you, milena and the girls. looking forward to reading a new post.
much love and many hugs-
Luisa
Three hours ago the following news came in via spiegel.de: “…
So, Tom, as you can see, you were in good company. Imagine, they drilled a hole into his skull and stapled it back while he was conscious! Of course we hope that you’ll distance yourself from Senator Kennedy insofar as your tumor won’t turn out to be malignant but I very much hope for your continued support of Barak Obama first thing you wake up!
Cheers,
Mishi
